Should I go to my friends funeral?

My childhood friend died several days ago of a drug overdose. We were always together as children. As we grew older we also grew apart because, I just couldn't stand to watch him hurt himself by taking so many drugs. We did not part on bad terms just went our separate ways. I had not spoken to him in five years or more. I'm not sure if I should go to the funeral or not mostly because, his parents like to always put on heirs and pretend they are better than everyone else one of his siblings posted for everyone to dress and act accordingly so as not to embarr the church or his family on his website. I want to pay my respects and try to remember him for who he was instead of who he turned into but, I don't think I can stand being around everyone I used to know. Should I go or just visit his grave at a later date when no one is around?
