Why is my boyfriend being so nice to me? We've been together for 7 months?

I was usually the one to initiate our spending time together. Then, after I cooked, cleaned his house and we'd had , he was ready for me to leave. We went on vacation a few weeks ago, he was mean most of the time & got drunk every night. I asked him to be nicer and he told me "This is the way I am, you can deal with it or leave". I made up my mind I was going to start "weaning" away from him. I deserve better. When we got home, I stopped calling him and only texted him twice a day unless I was responding to a text from him. Over the past week, he's been very attentive - asking me to spend time with him, complimenting the way I look, how proud he is of me, even calling or texting me just to say he loves me...He asked me to come over Saturday. He cooked dinner and he had already cleaned his house. He acted like he really wanted to BE with me. The was amazing, he was sensual, considerate and even asked me what felt good. Now I'm confused. Why the sudden change?
