Scenario... for the anatomy and physiology people?

A child, who has been previously vaccinated against whooping cough, subsequently develops a cough and other symptoms of the disease. The mother is upset because she thought the vaccinations would prevent the child from “catching” the disease. Explain why the child could still develop a mild form of whooping cough, despite having been vaccinated.
